Ah, Summer!
If you’re my friend on facebook, or follow me on twitter, you may have noticed me complaining about the heat recently. While it’s true that I do heart complaining about things, you will rarely catch me complaining about it being too hot.
I lived in Tucson for 4 years and loved the weather. I’m usually freezing cold when everyone else is hot. I require at least 70 degrees to even wear capri pants, let alone shorts.
But this week has been all triple digits, all week long, in an area that is used to it barely reaching the 90s in the summer.
Did I mention that I don’t have air conditioning? The temperature in our house never went below 80 degrees, even in the middle of the night, and got as high as 93 at one point.
In desperation, Jerrad went in search of a kiddie pool for our backyard because the hose and sprinklers just weren’t cutting it anymore. After trips to every store in town, he bought what we believe to be the last pool in town.
Behold the thing of beauty occupying my backyard and consuming my afternoons:

Fortunately, today the heat has broken a bit and now it’s just in the upper 80s. But it made for a very unproductive week for me.
Even more so than usual, I mean.
I have the Road Trip blog still kicking around in my head, and the pictures for it are off the camera. It’s just been way too hot to hang out inside the house, and literally impossible to sit still and think straight while inside said ridiculously hot house.
Unfortunately, this means not only did I not write any blogs, I didn’t do laundry, I didn’t clean anything…we haven’t even put the luggage away from our trip yet. My to-do list is very long, and very few things are crossed off.
But you know what? The world hasn’t ended! In fact, this heat situation has actually forced me to stop and enjoy the summer.
Last year, at the end of summer, I found myself saying, “But, but… summer is over, and we never went to the lake, we didn’t go camping, we hardly grilled…” It was like the whole season passed us by.
Not this summer. This week almost every day has been a perfect summer day of swimming, listening to music, grilling, and having drinks.
Next week I won’t have the excuse of the extreme heat to ignore my “chores”, so I’ll have to find that balance between feeling productive and enjoying my free time that always seems to elude me.
But, that’s next week. If you’ll excuse me, I have just enough time for a dip before I meet a friend for drinks and dinner.

You should probably just move to Manhattan Beach. It never gets about 80 and there's a breeze.
This is your sister, I always forget my log in for google.
You sound really balanced and like you have a good perspective on things and like the extreme heat has not gotten the best of you. You made lemonade from lemons.
Hard to do anything in the extreme heat… except lay about and be lazy. I think that's why a part of the Spanish culture takes naps in late afternoon and doesn't eat until midnight.
When you look at summer and their heat, that lifestyle makes total sense. ;o)
Good for you to sit back and relax… helps with all things in life, not just perspective…
Wishing you luck… ;o)
That looks heavenly. I wanted to get one for the kids (me), but David thinks they are still too little, and he's probably right. Oh well. Maybe next smmer.
