Do You Believe in Ghosts?
Really, I’m serious.
In the interest of avoiding doing any actual work, I was looking at the posts on the NS site of all places, and there is a thread going where people are posting supernatural things that have happened to them. Just about every one starts like this, “I know it sounds crazy, but…”. There are some links posted to lists of the most haunted hotels and whatnot.
I’m almost embarrassed to admit I recognized almost every one of those places from a book I read, an episode of Ghost Hunters, or some other haunt-y TV show. Sometimes I make Jerrad watch this stuff with me, and make comments that just point out what a tool I am.
We were watching some show, I don’t remember what, and they were talking about needing to involve parapsychologists. I said something like, “Oh, I wonder if it’s Ed & Lorraine Warren. They’re like famous parapsychologists, but I think they’re kind of old so I don’t know if they’re still working, or they might even be dead.” Sure enough, that’s exactly who they were talking about. Jerrad just gave me a look that said, Why do you know that? Or it may have said, Why am I marrying such a freak?
Anyway, I will share some freaky things I’ve experienced, and I want you guys to leave me comments with your stories. I know you have some. Don’t be shy.
My grandmother died in 1995. Up until her death she lived in the same house in Wheeling, West Virginia she had raised her children in, and I think I spent more of my childhood there than in my own home. Weird things constantly happened in this house. We would wake up in the morning, and all or most of the pictures would be turned sideways on the wall. We would hear footsteps going up and down the stairs to the second floor or to the basement. We would come back in the house from being outside and our things would be moved around or piled on top of each other in little sculptures. My grandmother had lots of stories of more personal experiences and refused to sleep upstairs by herself. My grandfather died when I was 2, and I never remember her sleeping anywhere but the living room couch. I slept upstairs exactly once and that was with my sister in the other bed. I had the most terrifying dreams, and kept hearing noises and seeing shadows moving around the room. My dad later told me a story about the first night they moved into the house. They had just gone to bed and heard this noise that sounded like a heavy piece of furniture was being pushed out onto the second floor landing, then crashing over the landing and down the stairs. The scariest part was the upstairs was so small that at the first sound of the dresser being pushed they all got up and looked out their doors. They could clearly see that nothing was going on at the same time they were hearing all this noise. But the main thing about that house was the “feeling”. It’s hard to describe, but it just constantly felt like someone or something was invading your personal space all the time. The double bed from that upstairs bedroom is in one of the extra bedrooms at my dad’s house, and I can just never sleep there. I’ll go out of my way to take the other room, or sleep on the couch.
When I was about 16, my mom and I, and her 4th husband, my 2nd stepfather, were renting a house in Bumfuck, I mean Kingwood, West Virginia. I had the bedroom in the back of the house, and outside my room was a hallway. The end of the hallway, right outside my door, was the door to a hall closet. I usually slept with my door open because if I didn’t the cats would scratch to get in or out. We had a night light in the bathroom which lit up the hallway just a bit. I woke up in the middle of the night and just as I opened my eyes I very clearly saw a man walk out of the hall closet and quickly walk up the hallway. I saw him as clear as day, in vivid detail – baseball hat, red flannel jacket, jeans, workboots. I was so convinced that it was a real person, I woke up my mom and stepdad, who searched the whole house and checked the doors and windows. We had already lived in this house for 4 years, and nothing like that had happened before, and it never happened again.
I have a few more, but one involves a psychic so I don’t know if that applies. Anyway, I want you guys to play now.
